The Battle of Lexington marks the start of the American Revolutionary War, on Wednesday, April 19, 1775. Approximately 240 British soldiers arrived in Lexington, where they found close to 70 selected members of the militia, called minutemen, because they could be ready to fight in a minute’s time.
