4/6/21 # Travel tips – Learn from my mistakes

Some of the best tactics to keep your family safe…

Now that the Easter Bunny has come and things are beginning to look a little more normal, are you planning a vacation this summer?

When my kids were young, I liked to take my kids to different places during the summer and explore our great country. I imagine after being restricted from traveling, my guess is many of you are itching to take a road trip! Whether it be to see some friends, family or somewhere new.

Here’s 3 concealed carry tips for traveling with protection (your firearm).

First, and I’d say the most important tips is to know the concealed carry laws along your route and for your final destination. There’s an easy way to do this, assuming you already have a concealed carry permit in your home state.

This map will show you the other states that honor your license to carry, so you’ll know immediately, if you can carry where you are going.

Note the placement of the hands on the steering wheel

Secondly, knowing what to do if you get pulled over by police.  Remember your Driver’s Ed class? Place your hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel, turn on the dome light if it’s dark and wait for the police to approach you.

* I’ve heard this Tip if you are concealing and you get pulled over, extend your fingers out (hands of course being at 10 and 2 on steering wheel) that this is a non-verbal way to politely communicate to the officer that you’re armed.

Remember, when traveling, to check the state laws whether or not you must notify the officer if you have a firearm.

One other item you might find quite useful for traveling, depending on state laws, would be to have a portable safe for traveling or storage.

Highly recommended, especially when you’re in a new town, to  practice Cooper’s color codes of situational awareness. What are color codes?

Develop a plan.

Make sure everyone in the family knows what the plan is, any key words and the expected action family members are to take.

All the hotels have escape routes posted. Make sure you have your own escape route too.

If you have small children, practice it often so they are familiar with the words and the routine.  Albeit, a little trickery when traveling with young ‘uns.

Remember, knowledge is power and being prepared can save lives. AND, don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the scenery!

Concealed carry fashion -Learn from my mistakes

One of the biggest concerns when you start concealing your firearm, is that EVERYONE can tell, EVERYONE can see it.

First, Congratulations on becoming Self Reliant! Woohoo

Secondly, that means it’s time for a closet redo and wardrobe make-over!

What to do with your clothes when you being to conceal? Closet Make-Over

I’m sure you’re another fashion-ista who’s recently discovered the world of dressing dilemmas when it comes to concealed carry. Honey, you are not alone!

Chances are you’re finding that your old style doesn’t work in your new lifestyle.

It’s time for a closet shuffle (click here to read about how to organize your clothes) and everyone goes through this wardrobe transition when they make the decision to carry on body for safety. After all you understand you will be your own first responder.

You may be one of the new five million of new gun owners joining forces with many other Americans who exercise their right to bear arms. Some choose gun ownership for sport, hunting or simply for home or self defense. After all, these are some crazy times.

For those who are gun owners for self defense, I bet you’re a bit shocked that your existing wardrobe doesn’t quite work and your firearm likely imprints in your form fitting, body hugging clothes.

This is not just an excuse to say “I have nothing to wear”! but you should take some time and give your closet a make-over.

Really look at your clothes. Does the item still fit? Do you love it? The big test comes when you try on the garment, add your firearm to your body and observe in the mirror. Can you, or do you believe the “average person” would notice the firearm imprinting its silhouette through your clothes?

This was my world too! Talk about having “Nothing to wear” LOL….

But seriously, I had a closet full of professional, stylish, form fitting and tailored clothes (having worked most of my life in interior design industry working  with home builders and their new buyers).

You men have it easier 😊 but it’s not so easy for women to conceal a firearm. For example, many of our (women) clothes have small pockets, barely big enough for lipstick let alone a gun.

So here’s the question, How do you conceal (a gun) without printing?

That’s one reason why I started designing clothing. I know what its like to be so frustrated and I want to help you to never be a victim by making it easy for you to choose to carry.

How? By giving you garments with stylish designs and give discreet access to your firearm. I’ve taken the worry out of dressing. Plus, our clothes are proudly Made in America.

We add features like ruffles, pleats, gathers, and nice fabrics with drape.

Not only are you concerned about someone noticing the bump on your hip, but your ability to retrieve it. After all, that’s what will matter.

It’s one thing to walk around so that no one can “see” that you’re armed. It’s another thing to actually be able to draw your firearm without a lot of effort.

Most of us carry somewhere around the waist. Although, this is considered the best location and most desired because your arms and hands can easily reach your firearm.

For example, it’s easier to draw (your firearm) when you carry appendix, or anywhere along the front of the body from  9 o’clock to 3 o’clock.

It becomes a bit more challenging, carrying further behind your natural side where your arms must now reach behind and backwards for a 4 o’clock draw or further if you carry at the small of back.

Dressing around a firearm also encompasses an important accessory, your holster. Consider how easy or how quickly you could draw from concealment.

Do you have to move your arms to an unnatural position to reach your firearm?

If so, you may want to consider either a different holster or carrying in a different location. Of course, you have to do what’s best for YOU. That’s why you’ve got options. There’s not one answer for everyone.

I also take into consideration what if or when you begin to feel uneasy about a situation,  can discreetly grip your firearm ahead of time (just in case) and know that you will not be a victim.

Planning ahead, being prepared and having the tools to defend your life are some of the reason you’ve joined so many others who live a lifestyle of being self reliant.

These are the skills we learn and will practice and hopefully never need.

As the seasons change, I hear many women struggle to continue carrying on body. As temperatures rise, along with hemlines, it’s not uncommon for women to look more at off body carry options like a purse or briefcase. Of course, a girl likes to have options! And, make a fashion statement.

Yes, you can be armed, fashionable (and feminine). We’re here to help you do just that! AND we’ll keep you incognito!

Let us know what your biggest challenges are in the comments below.

Learn from my mistakes in buying a firearm for the first time, What is Form 4473?

Form 4473

Congratulations!!

You’ve come to the decision that a firearm for self defense and protection makes sense, but you’re not sure of the process.

Is there really a background check to purchase a firearm? Everyone buying a gun MUST fill out Form 4473

YES, Form 4473, is a BACKGROUND CHECK! It’s the NICS.

Chances are if you never been down this road or you don’t have a friend to share some inside information with you, it can be a little overwhelming. After all , it’s an Official Government Document – eek!

As is it with the government, all paperwork must be exact.

For example, date of birth must be in format with 2-digit month and day, and 4 digit year.

There are no abbreviations for state of birth.

If you have a concealed carry weapons permit or license, the background check is quicker. If you don’t have this license, it’s best to included your social security number; unless you plan to wait for quite some time.

The background check is normally about a 20-30 minutes; unless there are some hiccups. If you were thinking about falsifying information – that not only is a big hiccup but it’s a felony charge!

Which can cause you to banned from owning a firearm.

So, take your time, go slow, and read all the questions. If you make a mistake, draw one single line through the error, and initial it. You don’t want to start over nor does the store as all documents are batched and counted.

You see it is regulated process. But once you know what to expect, it’s not so intimidating.

Typically, you’ll be able to go home with your firearm but pack some patience. Specially if your purchasing a firearm on a weekend when the system is very busy.

The Second Amendment is under attack

Ironically, many who argue for gun control have no idea what’s on Form 4473 and this background process. Fight to protect your right to own (any) firearm.

My first predator hunting experience and how it relates to concealed carry

My first predator hunting experience and how it relates to concealed carry

Don’t be an easy target for a predator

As my husband and I walked our way in to the woods to a tree stand for an evening hunt for coyotes, I became aware of so many similarities to living a lifestyle of self-reliance and predator hunting.

This weekend I had the pleasure of visiting friends’ farmland and had my first experience in hunting (other than a dove shoot). My husband grew up hunting and I’ve always been happy for him to have the opportunity to get in the woods. Now I fully understand why he likes to get in the woods.

Dove Shoot 2014

I knew that brought him such joy and peace to experience God in this way. To be one with the woods, nature and creation. Such beauty that a camera lens can’t capture. The sun shinning in your eyes as it plays pic-a-boo for a while as it slowly ducks behind a row of trees.

The evening sky glows in hues of pink, red and orange across the horizon. Even though it’s winter time (end of January 2021) most of the vegetation is brown and lifeless.

However, the woods are chirping with life. The sounds of squirrels, birds, ducks, deer, turkey and predators like coyotes and bobcats fill the air.

My first tree stand view and predator hunt

I was unaware at the beginning of our walk in, the importance of being as quite as possible from the beginning starting out with a quiet bad boy buggy and including our walk to the hunting stand. I admit, my husband had to tell me several times as we walked to be quite – the journey to the tree stand mattered and it’s important not to bring attention to ourselves or to disturb the habitat and run the animals off.

A semblance of what I believe the criminal “human predator” is like. He’s quite in every manner; doesn’t draw attention to himself or his environment. He leaves no evidence of being on the prowl.

We’re hunting predators, those (criminals) seeking to harm and kill the weak. My husband says it this way “they (coyotes) are an uninvited guest to an invitation only party”. The DNR (department of Natural Resources) calculates many factors, such as herd size statistics and food resources, into hunting guidelines.

Because coyotes aren’t native to Georgia (where I’m hunting) they can be hunted year round.

A coyote looks for an easy kill. Usually the weak and young, like a fawn.

Criminals look for easy targets. Are you a fawn? A deer in headlights? Are you situational aware of surroundings?

Unaware of surroundings

You might be if you’re constantly looking at your phone. Do you have the volume turned up with earplugs in? Do you meander in the parking lot on the way to or from your car, the mall or office?

These “transitional” spaces are the highest risks for attacks and abductions. You should be on high alert when getting in or out of your vehicle, coming out of a door or rounding a corner or blind area.

How is a female of 100 pounds or 200 pounds going to resist the strength of a man who’s likely taller, stronger and intent on causing harm, kidnap or more violent acts?

To me and many others, this is the power of having a firearm for protection and why it’s important for to carry on body. Concealing a firearm on body takes some time, but if you’re ever in a situation it’s best to be prepared! Not a victim.

Georgia DNR has no closed season for predators. This means predator hunting can be done year-round without limitations on how many can be harvested. And by whatever means (to do so effectively) like using night vision, thermal vision and such equipment. However, this doesn’t mean that you can do so without a license!

The is the same manner in which a human predator might hunt for their prey. For a “would be victim” to defend themself against such a predator, s/he needs a tool that can stop the threat, stop the attack on their life.

One of the best ways to stop this threat is with a tool that can give the victim the upper hand, the strength and power / muscle to fight back, defend her or himself and escape.

Such an equalizing tool is a firearm.

There are plenty of predators looking for victims, do your part to not become one.

The battle for “The Right to Bear Arms” needs your help. Here’s how you can help in Defending the Second Amendment

The battle for “The Right to Bear Arms” needs your help. Here’s how you can help in Defending the Second Amendment

If you’re reading this; chances are you’re a gun owner or interested in becoming one and you are concerned about your safety, your right to keep and bear arms and if this right will be there for your children’s children.

You’ve hear the saying “The squeaky wheel gets the oil”, right? Well, this is how you can help others make their voices louder so we can protect our God given rights, including the Right to KEEP and bear arms! Won’t you help and take some action?

I’m guessing you love this country, and having the right to defend yourself, your property and your life, right? The Second Amendment is for everyone, but not everyone wants you to have freedom. It’s under attack.

As we celebrate some major events this week, Martin Luther King day (who spoke about our founding principals “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” and the hope that we “live in a nation where …we won’t be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”).

We’ve all seen a lot of stuff lately that we never thought c/would – especially, here in the Land of the Free – America. We are only free if we defend our founding principals.

Our First and Second Amendments are well, the most important – they support all the others.

Let us remember we’re all in this together. We should come together and become the glue ourselves in supporting these organizations who back us and the right to choose how we defend our lives, property, and loved ones.

Here’s some great organizations you can join forces with to create a louder voice for defending our Second Amendment.

  • National Shooting Sports Foundation This is the Firearm industry trade association and who sponsors the coveted “Shot Show” trade show every year where the newest gear, firearms and accessory items are on display for the first time to the members for the industry.
  • The Second Amendment Foundation is “dedicated to promoting a better understanding about our Constitutional heritage to privately own and possess firearms.” They are involved in many legal case across the US defending the right to bear arms.

DC Project Women for Gun Rights

National Rifle Association

ACLJ (American Center for Law and Justice) does great work on humanity, religious freedoms, abortion issues and many others.

And on the state level look for these great organizations lobbying for gun rights:

Arizona Citizens Defense League

Georgia Carry lobbies for better gun rights in Georgia

Gun Rights for Illinois

Massachusetts

Montana shooting sports

North Carolina Gun Trust

Pennsylvania Gun owners

Virginia Citizens Defense League

Let’s all do our part in calling our representatives and making our voices heard. The old saying “the squeaky wheel gets the oil” can’t be truer than the times we’re living in. We must make some noise or the risk of our great nation and the values we treasure will be a memory.

Here’s a sample letter: excepts taken from open letter to all Americans from a “Team Sergeant”

To my elected Representative,

The purpose of the Second Amendment is to secure our ability to oppose enemies foreign and domestic, a guarantee against disorder and tyranny. The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them.’

A citizen’s right to keep and bear arms for personal defense unconnected with service in a militia has been reaffirmed in the U.S. Supreme Court decision (District of Columbia, et al. v Heller, 2008). The Court Justice Scalia wrote in the majority opinion: “The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.”

Throughout history, disarming the populace has always preceded tyrants’ accession of power. Hitler, Stalin, and Mao all disarmed their citizens prior to installing their murderous regimes. At the beginning of our own nation’s revolution, one of the first moves made by the British government was an attempt to disarm our citizens. When our Founding Fathers ensured that the 2nd Amendment was made a part of our Constitution, they were not just wasting ink. They were acting to ensure our present security was never forcibly endangered by tyrants, foreign or domestic.

But, is the problem really guns? It is important that we recognize that this is not a gun control problem; it is a complex sociological problem often resulting in malice and evil intent of the individual(s) choosing to use a tool such as a firearm to inflict harm and damage. Did we outlaw cars to combat drunk driving? Focus must be clear on the individual’s action and behavior; not the tool.

Consider domestic violence victims where the firearm is a great equalizer. The choice to defend oneself with a firearm is guaranteed by the Second Amendment. Every victim is alone in an attack. How long before help arrives, if it arrives at all or in a timely manner? The victimized individual should be able to defend themselves by whatever means possible.

This is our country; these are our rights. You swore to uphold them and defend The Constitution of the United States of America and I hired you to represent me. I urge you to support and vote for all Pro Second Amendment bill and object to any bill that infringes on these rights.

Fondly,
