Given the current status of society (breakdown) and the increase in crime of all sorts, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, the exponential increase in gun ownership as of late. in fact, 44% of US housholds owns a gun. That means there are a lot of “concealed carriers” out there. We are all on our own personal journey to self reliance, empowerment and protection.
We all have a right to defend ourselves. It’s a God Given right, regardless of what others may try to convince you of.
In this video, some of what many trainers in the industry agree with, are skills to hon in on and to practice.
Learning a new skill and habits take time. Learning a “new way to think” takes practice.
So, what is the most important skill when you carry?
Situational awareness!
As one who carries on a regular basis, it’s my hope and prayer, that I’ll never need to use it.
By utilizing my senses, sight first, keeping my eyes and head scanning the area around me, I can see who’s coming and going. I can avoid any potentially harmful situation.
This is the importance of SITUATIONAL AWARENESS! It gives you a chance to retreat, escape, and avoid being robbed, attacked, or worse…
Secondly, Making a wise decision to leave or flee a situation BEFORE the unthinkable happens, this my dear friends, is your Goal. Decision making is your next best skill to master. When the adrenaline starts flowing, your fine motor skills won’t. This is why thinking through “what if…” scenario helps to keep your mind sharp and to run on “auto-pilot” when your body enters into that heightened state of stress.
Remember, Your best fight is the one you didn’t have. And that is what we all hope for.
you’ve heard it said before, Everything is bigger in Texas!

August is the best time to take someone to the range!
It’s National Shooting Sports Month and coming of the heels of Summer Olympics in Tokyo, with Team USA has collected 6 medals in shooting, 3 of them GOLD!
There are 3 disciplines of shooting in Olympics – rifle, pistol and shotgun.
Rifle and pistol are about marksmanship skills hitting a still target where as shotgun is hitting a moving target or clay target (skeet)
“There are four gun types and three distances: 50m rifle, 10m air rifle, 25m rapid fire pistol and 10m air pistol. There are also three shooting positions: kneeling, where the athlete goes down on one knee and rests the gun on the other knee; prone, where the athlete shoots while lying down; and standing. Some events include all these positions.”
To some, firearms may look scary and intimidating. I understand that fear, as there is after all an exploding element happening in your hand and near your face….
But so is a car crash…. But, I digress.
I invite you to open your mind to the possibility of enjoyment of the shooting sports. I can attest to how much fun shooting clay (skeet) is! In fact, that was my first experiences with shooting (other than at camp as a kid with a .22)
There’s something about the satisfaction of seeing that orange clay disk burst into tiny little bits – and there’s no mistaking who did it! 😊. Such Empowerment! Success! And pure JOY!
It’s building confidence and self esteem – it’s a wonderful dish of empowerment for the soul.
And you can have this too! Many ranges have special events or classes just for women.
Women are the largest, and fastest, growing demographic, and during August Shooting Sports Month, look for special events and invite your friends. This is a great way to introduce your kids, neighbors, girlfriends, mom and others to shooting sports.
But not just women, we need to teach the youth as well!
If you’re a woman, finding a female only class gives you “a safe environment” to ask any question. There’s no shame, no judgement, no embarrassment. We’ve all have to start our journey in order to get where we are now. We’ve been there if that’s where you are. The important step is to start… and it’s always more fun with a friend!
So you say you’ve never even touched a gun? No problem! Sign up for a beginner class at your range or get a friend to take you to the range or the class with you. No matter the skill level, there’s always golden nuggets in taking a class.
Ever instructor teaches differently so you’re likely to hear something new with a different instructor.
As President Ronald Reagan said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.
We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”
Learn from my mistakes #137 – Having the right ammo makes shooting more fun.
There’s a lot of industry language, and if you’re new to firearms it can be ‘just one more’ thing to make you feel unsure, filled with anxiety and well, like you know nothing.
So, let’s start at the beginning, with our ABC’s as it were
I get it. No one wants to sound dumb, or vulnerable. But we all start with little knowledge at the beginning of our journey. Whether it’s a new sport like golf or tennis or even driving a car.
I know from personal experience that it can be a bit intimidating as a woman, to walk into a gun range or store, by yourself (and no friend for moral support).
I think many stores now realize that the female shopper makes up the fastest growing demographic and if they ignore you, they are missing out on a loyal shopper. This is good news and I hope encouraging to all the new female shooters and new gun owners!
With that, let’s get started with A for AMMO
As you’ve heard “knowledge is power”, so here’ a bit of ammunition knowledge.

The casing is the outer metal piece of the cartridge that contains the primer and the powder. Casings metals matter and can affect the recoil. See photo for more information.
Understanding your ammunition caliber and grain can make a difference on how quickly you’re able to get back on target after a shot and how much recoil (or kick) you feel after pulling the trigger.
If you’re new to shooting, you may find that starting with a smaller caliber pistol, like a .22, is a great introduction. Not much noise or “kick” (recoil). You’ll love shooting this firearm! It’s easy to handle and has minimal recoil. “Think” bb gun.
And given the current shortage of ammunition, this is one caliber of ammo you’re likely to find!
Another important fact is to have the right caliber of ammunition for your firearm (there are a few exceptions but you get the point). This is so important that gun manufactures stamp the type of cartridge on the barrel and / or on the slide. So, if you’re ever unsure, look for this information.
B for BANG!
The gunpowder burns hot and quick and high-pressure gas is created, explodes and forces the projectile (bullet) down and out of the barrel… with a B-A-N-G!
Another factor to bang and recoil of shooting is how much does the actual bullet weigh? The part that explodes out of the muzzle and hits the target. This is where Grain comes in. The heavier the bullet, the more force it takes to have it leave the muzzle and thus we must have an equal and opposite motion… and we feel the recoil.
“The grain is the number next to bullet caliber that refers to the actual weight of the bullet. Some common 9mm grains are 115 GR, 124 GR and 147 GR. The grain coupled with the amount of powder impacts the felt-recoil. The higher the grain, the heavier the bullet which means the lower the felt recoil. A happy medium for most is usually the 124 grain.” (T1 Ammo)
C is for (re) COIL
To assist with recoil management, make sure you have a good proper grip. The webbing between your thumb and index finger should be up as high as possible on the back or “beaver tail” but it must be just below where the slide racks backwards, it won’t take your skin with it.
Wrap fingers around the grip firmly with your strong hand. Using your support hand conversely wrap around the grip.
A good grip with keeping your wrist/arms firm and stiff allow the firearm to do it’s thing (recycle to load another round). Chances are if you don’t have a good grip it’s possible that recoil could get knocked out of your hands.
You’re on your way to having more fun at the range know that you’re armed with more knowledge.
Remember your ABC’s – having the right AMMO, produces the right BANG while managing the (re)COIL.
