What is Constitutional Carry and what it means for Georgia

As crimes spikes across the nation, more people are purchasing firearms for their protection. It’s important to know your state’s gun laws.

If you live in Georgia, last year Constitutional Carry was made law of the land. In short, anyone legally able to may carry a concealed handgun without a permit.

Recently, USCCA (the United States Concealed Carry Association) published a clear reference which I‘ve linked here.

How to talk to those who support gun control. Hold your ground and have a conversation — not a fight or argument.

I feel we are at a boiling point in America on so many levels. One side against the other pushing and believing with all their hearts in what they say (or believe in) is the “absolute truth”.

We all know no matter how thin the pancake is, there are always two sides.

So, the question remains how to talk rationally to those who are for gun control?

One of the most important things to remember is getting off on the right foot.

Begin the conversation with finding common ground. “How”? you may ask.

We all want to feel safe in our own homes and communities and to protect our family.

Share your values why feeling safe matters to you –

  • I carry to protect myself / yourself and Life.
  • A firearm equalizes the malice of evil intent
  • I don’t want to be helpless – I don’t want to be a victim
  • Chances are no one will be there to help (or save me) so I will need to be the first responder to a crime scene or what may have been a potential crime scene but was warded off because I was prepared individual

Here are some ways to brainstorm

  • Sharing your truth is an opportunity to inform, enlighten, inspire and support our Constitutional rights.
  • . Write down a list of everything you would want someone to know about why you support 2A rights.
  • Then, write a benefit for the person you are (or my in contact with)
  • Give yourself several responses
  • Speak calmly and address the value for them (i.e. What’s in it for me)

Speak calmly and from your heart.

Share your story and let your emotions out – don’t force them but don’t be embarrassed if the reason you chose a firearm brought tears to your eyes.

Come from a place of education rather than throwing the Constitution at them. Education is such an eye opener.

Relate the fear, nervousness of learning to drive a car (also a deadly weapon – in the wrong hands) to firearms. Once you learn proper gun safety and handling rules, (learning “how” to drive and practicing driving) your fear and nerves subside.

After all, it’s the PERSON  using the instrument (car, truck, knife, or firearm) not the object.

There are already many laws “on the books” and that doesn’t stop malicious intent. Evil cannot be stopped – other than by a higher power, i.e. God.

Asking questions and LISTEN.

Do you believe you have a right to survive and to protect your family?

Your wife, child(ren), mom, dad, siblings, neighbor, etc.?

If so, the Second Amendment guarantees your freedom to choose how to protect them.

New Found Freedom in Shooting Sports

August is the best time to take someone to the range!

It’s National Shooting Sports Month and coming of the heels of Summer Olympics in Tokyo, with Team USA has collected 6 medals in shooting, 3 of them GOLD!

There are 3 disciplines of shooting in Olympics – rifle, pistol and shotgun.

Rifle and pistol are about marksmanship skills hitting a still target where as shotgun is hitting a moving target or clay target (skeet)

There are four gun types and three distances: 50m rifle, 10m air rifle, 25m rapid fire pistol and 10m air pistol. There are also three shooting positions: kneeling, where the athlete goes down on one knee and rests the gun on the other knee; prone, where the athlete shoots while lying down; and standing. Some events include all these positions.”

To some, firearms may look scary and intimidating. I understand that fear, as there is after all an exploding element happening in your hand and near your face….

But so is a car crash…. But, I digress.

I invite you to open your mind to the possibility of enjoyment of the shooting sports. I can attest to how much fun shooting clay (skeet) is! In fact, that was my first experiences with shooting (other than at camp as a kid with a .22)

There’s something about the satisfaction of seeing that orange clay disk burst into tiny little bits  – and there’s no mistaking who did it! 😊. Such Empowerment! Success! And pure JOY!

It’s building confidence and self esteem – it’s a wonderful dish of empowerment for the soul.

And you can have this too!  Many ranges have special events or classes just for women.

Women are the largest, and fastest, growing demographic, and during August Shooting Sports Month, look for special events and invite your friends. This is a great way to introduce your kids, neighbors, girlfriends, mom and others to shooting sports.

But not just women, we need to teach the youth as well!

If you’re a woman, finding a female only class gives you “a safe environment” to ask any question. There’s no shame, no judgement, no embarrassment. We’ve all have to start our journey in order to get where we are now. We’ve been there if that’s where you are. The important step is to start… and it’s always more fun with a friend!

So you say you’ve never even touched a gun? No problem! Sign up for a beginner class at your range or get a friend to take you to the range or the class with you. No matter the skill level, there’s always golden nuggets in taking a class.

Ever instructor teaches differently so you’re likely to hear something new with a different instructor.

You can prepare for Emergencies

I bet you are feeling like me – everything seems to be crazy and every thing is an emergency. Whether its financial, career, self protection, or food. We’re in a time of crisis but not all of it is of our own making.

Let’s talk about where we find common emergencies. How can we prepare for the unexpected and what are the solutions.

Sometimes the ER is about self defense

When its in the middle of the night, and something goes “bump”, that’s an emergency.

Maybe your husband is out of town on a business trip or you’re a single mom, how and what do you do to keep your family safe when you’re startled awake at 3:00 am.

This could be you… you wake up and see a stranger ascending your stairs toward the bedrooms. Are you prepared to protect your family?

Fortunately, for this particular woman, she’s a gun owner.

Training is vital and practice makes perfect right. With the country on lock down, it’s easy to slip out of routine…. and out of training.

With the recent surges in gun sales and much unrest, ammunition is in short supply. So, how do you practice with stay at home orders?

A great and very effective measure of training is called “dry-fire”. I”m giving myself a wake up call and need to schedule in at least 5 minutes to practice, ideally, every day. The main thing is just to start, right?!

Be prepared for self defense. A lot of people are being hurt. Do you have a way to protect yourself, your kids, or others?

Maybe firearms are a little intimidating right now; there are many non lethal tools available. You can check some of them out here.

A “Get Home bag” or a “Bug Out Bag”?

A Get Home Bag (GHB) is just that. You are out, away from home and need to get home. Maybe you’re unable to get home due to weather – I’ll never forget “Snow-Mageddon” in Atlanta.

A Bug Out Bag (BOB) needs different gear as you are leaving the safety of home and will be among outside elements for survival (for awhile).

Basically, gear for survival – food, shelter, water. A means of self defense (knife, firearm are ideal because they can also be used for hunting). Don’t forget about a first aid kit. Things happen! Keep in mind you want items that are portable and lightweight.

As far as self defense tools, it’s ideal to have some layers of protection. A firearm isn’t always the best option. I’m a rep for Damsel in Defense and all our gear is non lethal.

Non lethal tools range from pepper sprays,Tactical pens, car care kits, striking tools, stun guns, concealed carry purses and more.

What about your finances? Yes, we even need to have an emergency fund.

If you know me, you won’t be surprised by the recommendation of Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey.

Honestly, in thinking about emergencies, finances weren’t at top of the list, nor was thinking about insurance. Not everything you think should be covered is actually covered. You certainly don’t want to find out after a natural disaster, you didn’t have the coverage your thought. Remember Hurricane Katrina?

This is a good time to double checking with your insurance carrier. You don’t want to be surprisd!

After all, We are in hurricane season and you may be surprised to find out that most policies don’t cover flood damages. Are you prepared for natural disasters?

With the world upside down, I hope I have shared some things that can help you to feel more prepared and protected.

Remember, your life is worth fighting for. I design clothing to make it easy to dress around your defense tool. As American Express said; “Never leave home without it” –  a self-defense tool.
